Victoria Bright
Ms VICTORIA BRIGHT is qualified in the UK as a solicitor and has been called to the Ghana Bar. Her 26 years as an international telecommunications/corporate/projects lawyer spans both private practice and industry. Presently, she is the only lawyer in Ghana with the experience of both training (Taylor Wessing Solicitors) and working at partner level in a top global law firm (“DLA Piper"). She is also the only lawyer in Ghana and the first African to have attended the prestigious College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium. With this unique background she is able not only to appreciate but relate at all levels to multinational corporations operating in Ghana as well as sophisticated Western clients with very high expectations and demands of their law firm. Additionally, Victoria is unusual in the sense that she has had hands on experience in operating at the very highest levels in Government, providing legal advice to the Office of the President, Ministry of Communications, Ministry of Energy, VRA and various other Government Ministries. Accordingly, her understanding of the dynamics and intricacies of the political environment in which companies and corporations operate in Ghana – the significance of which is not always immediately appreciated by foreign corporations – is second to none.
Victoria understands the peculiar environment of international business. She has advised Ghana Club 100 companies and Government Institutions, UK FTSE 100 companies and senior corporate executives on all aspects of their business – including legal risk management; negotiating and drafting a wide range of international commercial and corporate agreements. She has also advised several UK government departments on a regular basis on various large scale projects with the private sector, including telecommunications transactions, public private partnership agreements and agreements in the energy sector. She acted for several years as local counsel for a global US law firm whilst they were involved in a number of projects in Ghana.
Victoria’s particular speciality is in transactional IT and telecommunications work, data protection/freedom of information law, outsourcing, PPP, energy and large scale projects. Whilst practising in the UK, Victoria was listed as a telecommunications expert in “Legal Experts”.
In the UK, Victoria regularly wrote articles and spoke at conferences on technology, telecommunications and corporate issues. She wrote the IT chapter of “The Euro in Law and Practice” and regularly chaired various corporate conferences. Victoria also won the African, Caribbean & Asian Lawyers’ Association’s “Solicitor of the Year” award for 2000. In 2005 Victoria won the GPA Personality of the Year Award – an annual award given to individuals who have made a significant contribution towards enhancing the image of Ghanaians in Europe.
